The Risk of Staying on Windows 10
Microsoft stopped providing free security updates for Windows 10 on 14 October 2025. Devices still running Windows 10 continue to function, but every vulnerability discovered from that date onwards remains permanently unpatched. Cyber criminals actively target businesses running unsupported operating systems, knowing the gaps will never be closed.
Extended Security Updates (ESUs) are available as a paid option, but they increase in price each year, provide only security patches with no new features or performance improvements, and are a delay tactic rather than a solution. The right move is a planned migration to Windows 11.
Six Steps to a Smooth Windows 11 Migration
Catalogue every machine in your business. For each device, record the processor, RAM, storage capacity, and whether TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are present. These are the baseline requirements for Windows 11.
Sort devices into three groups: those that can be upgraded in place, those that need a firmware update to meet requirements, and those that are too old and need replacing. This gives you a clear picture of the cost and effort involved.
Test any business-critical software against Windows 11 before rolling out. Most modern applications are compatible, but older line-of-business software or specialist industry tools may need updating. Contact vendors early if there is any uncertainty.
Upgrade in waves rather than all at once. Start with a pilot group of willing, technically comfortable staff. Use their experience to refine the process before rolling out to the rest of the business. Avoid peak operational periods.
Staff who understand what is changing, why it is happening, and where to go for help make the transition smoother. Brief them in advance, provide practical guides for any interface changes, and ensure the IT helpdesk is resourced for the upgrade period.
Windows 11 offers improved security capabilities that may not all be active by default. After migration, review endpoint protection configurations, ensure BitLocker encryption is applied where appropriate, and confirm backup arrangements are intact.
