Why Your Backup Might Not Save You
Ransomware attacks encrypt your data and demand payment for the key to unlock it. Even paying the ransom does not guarantee recovery. A reliable, modern backup is the most effective way to recover without paying, but the critical word is modern. Many businesses are still running backup systems that were not designed to withstand today’s attacks.
Outdated backup solutions expose businesses in three specific ways that newer systems address directly.
Three Ways Outdated Backups Fall Short
1. Backups are being targeted directly
Attackers know that backups are your recovery route, so they target them before triggering the main attack. Older backup systems with no immutability protection can be encrypted or deleted alongside the primary data, leaving no recovery option. A backup that can be reached by an attacker inside your network is not a safe backup.
2. Missing encryption
Backup data that is not encrypted can be tampered with or read by attackers who access it. Research found that nearly a third of businesses do not encrypt their backup data. Encryption ensures that even if the backup storage is accessed, the data within it cannot be used or modified without the correct key.
3. Restore failures
Old backup systems often fail at the point of recovery. The backup jobs may complete without error flags, but restoring usable data from them is a different matter. Without regular tested restores, businesses often discover the backup does not work at the worst possible moment.
The Modern Solution: Immutable Storage
Immutable backup storage prevents data from being altered or deleted once written, regardless of what happens to the rest of the network. Even an attacker with administrator-level access cannot modify or delete an immutable backup. Combined with encryption, offsite storage, and regular recovery testing, this provides a reliable safety net that older solutions cannot match.
