Streamlining Your Workflow: Auto-Launch Apps in Windows 11

Windows 11 lets you set apps to open automatically at login. Here is how to do it, and why keeping the list short matters for performance.

Why Auto-Launch Apps?

Small inefficiencies compound across a working week. If your team spends two or three minutes each morning finding and opening the applications they use every day, that time adds up. Windows 11 lets you configure apps to open automatically at login, so your tools are ready the moment you sit down.

The benefit is modest for any individual but multiplied across a team it represents a practical, zero-cost productivity improvement. It also reduces the temptation to leave applications running overnight to avoid the morning start-up routine.

How to Set Up Auto-Launch Apps

Method 1: Through Windows Settings

Open Settings by pressing Windows key + I, then navigate to Apps and select Startup. You will see a list of apps that support auto-launch, each with a toggle switch. Enable the toggle for any app you want to open at login. This is the quickest route for commonly used applications.

Method 2: Via the Startup folder

If an application does not appear in the Settings list, you can add it manually. Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialogue, type shell:startup and press OK. This opens the Startup folder. Locate the application’s .exe file (usually in Program Files), create a shortcut, and place it in this folder. The app will then launch automatically at login.

A Note on Keeping It Lean

More startup apps means more demand on your computer’s resources at login. If too many applications are configured to launch simultaneously, the startup process slows down and you end up waiting longer before the machine is usable. Limit auto-launch to the two or three applications your team genuinely opens every day without exception. For everything else, the few seconds to open them manually is a worthwhile trade-off.

If you notice your team’s machines are running slowly at startup, a review of the startup application list is one of the first things to check. Blowfish Technology can review and configure device settings for businesses across the North West as part of a managed IT service.
